Scientist Awards Conference Awards for Scientists are available for biostatisticians from ISCB target countries (in particular countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as Third World countries) to attend and present a paper at the 31st ISCB Meeting in Montpellier, France, from 29 August – 2 September 2010. Up to six such awards will be granted. Selection will be made on the basis of submission of an abstract together with the poster to be displayed or the slides for an oral presentation. Judges will be looking for contributions describing new statistical methods and illustrating their implementation in medical research, or presenting the results of medical studies which involve novel and interesting applications of biostatistics. It is the blend of statistics and medical research that is being sought: contributions presenting only new theory or only study results will not be selected.

1. The ISCB Conference Awards for Scientists Scheme is administered by the Subcommittee on 'National Groups' established by the Executive Committee of ISCB. The purpose of the scheme is to support and encourage biostatisticians working under financial constraints, and to enable them to participate in international dialogue.
| | | 2. Who can apply? Scientists working or studying in one of the 'ISCB target countries' (in particular countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as Third World countries) whose work will benefit by attending an ISCB conference. | | | 3. What is covered by the award? The registration fee is waived and inexpensive accommodation is organised and paid for by ISCB. Furthermore, a conference course may be attended free of charge. | | | 4. What are the conditions for application? a) Submission of the slides of an intended oral presentation or a complete poster which must concern the application of statistical methodology to clinical or epidemiological research. Applicants who do not have a specialist topic to present are invited to prepare a more general paper with a title such as 'The need for biostatistical development in my country/region/department'. Applications with purely theoretical content or those which are mere routine analyses of data sets are not encouraged by the ISCB. Only one submission per applicant is permissible. b) Submission of a completed application form (item 6). The application has to be received by the Chairman, ISCB Subcommittee on 'National Groups' by 15 March 2010.
| | | 5. Who will decide on an application? The 'National Groups' Subcommittee will decide as soon as possible, usually within six weeks of the closing date for applications, based on the following criteria: Quality of summary, financial need, value of attendance at meeting to region (to National Groups), preference to those not supported by ISCB for the previous meeting, possible set-up of future National Groups. In selecting award winners, each member of the Subcommittee will independently grade each application. In the case of ties in total grades, the Subcommittee will make the final selection through discussion. The Chairman of the Subcommittee will inform each applicant on the Subcommittee's decision.
| | | 6. What are the conditions for the travel fee support? First-time attendants can apply for the support of travel fees. Up to one travel fee support per year will be granted. A separate request for travel fee has to be submitted through e-mail, together with the CAS application. In case of more applications selection will be made on a similar basis as for the CAS awards.
